After the Second World War, Germany was split into four occupation zones - the east under Russian control, and the west under American, British and French control. The agreement to divide Germany led to the creation of military liaison missions that could travel into enemy territory. However, in reality, BRIXMIS (the British Commander-in-Chief’s Mission to the Soviet Forces) became spies. In the first video of a four-part series, we meet former BRIXMIS NCO Dave Butler, who was part of a three-man team allowed to enter Communist-controlled East Germany. He gathered intelligence on the Soviets for years, and with us revisited a lucky discovery that helped NATO understand more about the Russian war machine during the Cold War.
