Brazilian Variations for Snare Drum

Here is the solo Brazilian Variations For Snare Drum from my book Broad Strokes. The book is available at Tapspace.com. The composition incorporates several different Brazilian drumming styles, including Samba, Batucada Samba, Bossa Nova, Baio, Afoxe, and Maracatu. The solo is heavily influenced by the techniques of Brazilian percussion instruments, including the pandiero, repenique, tamborim, and caixa. There is a click track on the recording to help guide you through the several different tempos and tempo changes in the solo. All the solos in the book have a track with the click and one without it. This piece should be played with a very slight triplet lilt, which is common in the Brazilian drumming style. You should also try to play just a wee bit ahead of the click to create a constant sense of forward momentum. There are two open cadenzas in the solo. For this performance, I have shortened the second one. The recording that comes with the book contains a much longer final cadenza. I am using my old Sonor Horst Link Signature HLD593 Bell Bronze Snare Drum which is 4" × 14". The drum is tuned lower than usual for a thicker brush sound. You can also use a 6.5 metal snare tuned high to play the solo with good results. This solo has a huge dynamic range so I have used a little audio compression to help you hear the subtleties. Hope you enjoy.
