What To Avoid When Taking Metoprolol (& Beta Blockers) | Substances & Medication Interactions Metoprolol (also known as Lopressor) is a beta blocker used to treat hypertension, anginal chest pain, myocardial infarctions, and arrhythmias. However, metoprolol (and other beta blockers) can cause side effects, including bradycardia (abnormally low heart rate) and hypotension (low blood pressure). In this lesson, we discuss certain dietary, over the counter and prescription medications that can interact with metoprolol and other beta blockers to affect their metabolism, leading to excessive levels of metoprolol and increased risk of side effects.
