Mother and son share rare muscle disorder, treated decades apart by same doctor

Twenty-four years ago, Bobbi Heinold, 17, was diagnosed with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, a genetic muscle condition characterized by weakness, especially in the face, shoulder blades and upper arms. Doctors told her it could affect her quality of life. Bobbi and her mom drove from their Indiana home to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, to learn about her options. Bobbi eventually had the surgery. One member of the surgical team was Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, M.D., Ph.D., then a Mayo Clinic orthopedic surgery fellow. In November 2020, Bobbi returned to Mayo for the first time in years ― not as a patient, but as a mom. Her son Daniel, 17, had the same condition and was scheduled for surgery with Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo, now a Mayo Clinic orthopedic surgeon and chair of the Division of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at Mayo Clinic. Patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer who undergo surgery and are treated with chemotherapy, may be able to forgo significant radiation therapy without increasing the risk of their cancer spreading, according to the results of a clinical trial led by researchers at Mayo Clinic. “We found that decreasing the amount of radiation therapy after a minimally invasive robotic surgery improved the quality of life of patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer while delivering excellent cure rates,” says Dr. Eric Moore, a Mayo Clinic otolaryngologist. “In essence, we found exactly the right amount of treatment to deliver without over-treating these patients.” ____________________________________________ For the safety of its patients, staff and visitors, Mayo Clinic has strict masking policies in place.
