Kurt Rambis Hornets 15pts/9rebs/3asts/4stls vs Lakers (1989)

November 10 1989 Kurt Rambis gets a rousing ovation in a return to Los Angeles and outshines his opposing matchup A.C. Green, who the Lakers replaced Rambis with essentially, tallying 15 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals against his former teammates on the Los Angeles Lakers. Rambis saw his minutes steadily decrease as a member of the championship-hopeful Showtime Lakers, going from 21.3 minutes in 85-86 to just 12.1 two seasons later. That season, a free agent Rambis searched for new opportunities, and found a 4 year, 2.4 million dollar deal from the Charlotte Hornets, with a starting lineup spot waiting for him. Rambis rewarded their faith, giving the Hornets a career year, averaging 11.1 points (career high), 9.4 rebounds (career high), 2.1 assists (career high), 1.3 steals (.1 shy of career high), and 0.8 blocks. In an article written during the beginning of his time in Charlotte, Rambis expressed content in a new home: "It's great here, every place you drive, you're driving down tree-lined streets. You don't get that kind of peacefulness in L.A." He also stated his mindset heading into free agency, as well as his appreciation for his time in Los Angeles: "I don't know at what point, but I had no desire to come back. I love L.A., people were unbelievably nice to me and the fans were great. But one of the reasons I'm a pro basketball player is because I love to play, and I wasn't playing with the Lakers. I think, if there is such a thing, it was a perfect divorce. They were very good to me and I was very good to them, but it was time to move on." Class, through and through. Rambis also gave thought to how he'll be remembered, his "legacy" so to speak: "I just hope everyone remembers me as somebody who gave the fans their money's worth," he said. "They may not have always known if the Lakers were going to win or lose some nights, but they knew Kurt Rambis was going to go all out." Third person speech moment from Kurt. Rambis obviously kept his connections in L.A. He would return in the 93-94 season, would be hired as an assistant coach the following season, but would re-join the team for 26 games. He almost made the team again in 95-96, but joined the coaching staff instead. After remaining on the staff, he would become the interim head coach at age 40 for the lockout '99 season, coaching a team headlined by Shaq, Kobe, and Glen Rice/Eddie Jones (traded for each other). Phil Jackson would be hired for the next season, and Rambis was re-assigned to assistant GM to Jerry West. In 2001, he would make the change to join Jackson's coaching staff, remaining until Jackson's original retirement in 2004 (seeked a deal that would double his salary from 6 mill to 12 mill a year), and would be subsequently re-hired when Jackson took back over for Rudy T. He would remain on the bench with LA until 2009, where he went to coach a rebuilding Minnesota Timberwolves team. A sounding like entertaining team on paper, with Kevin Love, Michael Beasley (career high in points), Ricky Rubio, and Nikola Pekovic, the team instead stunk, and couldn't guard a door on the defensive side. Things didn't work, he tried running the triangle sometimes, and EVERYONE got hurt. Rambis was fired in 2011, and the Lakers re-hired him in the 13-14 season. After Phil Jackson took over the Knicks (disaster), Kurt was tapped to be lead assistant for first time head coach and swapping the Nike's (recently retired like a week before, Phil, first red flag, did offer the job first to Steve Kerr though) for dress shoes, Derek Fisher (disaster). After a tumultous season and a half, including the infamous Matt Barnes altercation (a$$-whooping), Fisher was fired and Rambis took over and did better than Fisher but the Knicks still sucked. That offseason Jeff Hornacek was hired as coach (not terrible, but definetly not good), and Rambis was again tapped as lead assistant. The Knicks went 60-104 under Hornacek, and the Knicks fired all three of Hornacek, Rambis, and big man in the castle Phil Jackson after the 17-18 season. Kurt is now an advisor with the Lakers, his fourth different job with the Lakers organization. He's reportedly the third most important voice in their war room, behind Rob Pelinka and new coach Darvin Ham, answering to owner Jeanie Buss. Rambis's wife Linda is Jeanie's best friend (reportedly) so that comes in handy for Kurt, and she's friendly with Phil Jackson, who also gets his thoughts out I'm sure.
