D1015 Western Champion (as D1010) hauling the Western Challenger

May 7th 2016 marked a special run for D1015 Western Champion. On the exact same day in 1966, Ian Allan ran a non-stop special from Paddington to Penzance, D1010 Western Campaigner hauled the charter the journey took 5 hours and 15 mins. It returned to Plymouth where Warship D823 Hermes took over and ran over the Southern Railway's 'Withered Arm' route (Plymouth-Tavistock-Okehampton-Exeter line) and onward to London Waterloo. For the 50th Anniversary D1015 masqueraded as D1010, however because of timing constraints the 2016 rerun went only as far as Plymouth and took the northern route to Okehampton via Exeter. Starting at near Aller Junction outside Newton Abbot the Western was running 20 mins early at this point. After a short stop at Plymouth D1015 is seen slogging up Hemerdon Bank, not by struggling but by a signal check from halfway up the climb after catching up with a late running Cross Country HST service. No helicopter was there to blighter the soundtrack here! On the return the Western is seen climbing out of Exeter Central, now on the Southern Mainline heading for Waterloo
