Educating girls and breaking barriers is what Afghan women do | Khatira Daryabi | TEDxUBCStudio

NOTE FROM TED: This talk contains a discussion of violence. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... A journey of biking to promote peace, equality to change the culture barriers, and raising our voices. This speech is an unheard bitter story of all Afghan women and children that has been ignored over the years. Enough is enough and a call to action, representing our voice in UN and the world is what we demand to build a new brighter Afghanistan for women leaders, mothers, and children. Khatira Daryabi is on a mission to promote equality, see Afghan girls go to school, bike, and prevents their dreams being bombed. She was born and raised in Afghanistan, and the challenges that she faced there, from the violation of children and women's rights to discrimination against her Hazara ethnic group, inspired her to bike to school and teach other girls to do the same. Despite the threats and traumatic repercussions, she ran biking protests for peace and equality in Kabul. She left Afghanistan alone at the age of 14 and started a new journey in Canada as a refugee. She was placed in foster care but used every opportunity to thrive - which included becoming a finalist for the 2020 International Children’s Peace Prize. She is currently studying for a dual degree bachelors of Psychology and International Relations, as well as a Master of Business Management at Sauder school of business with a full scholarship. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
