Michael Sembello ~ Maniac 1983 Disco Purrfection Version

Micheal hails from Philadelphia, PA born on April 17, 1954 and started his career as a session musican. Soon he was working with the likes of Stevie Wonder on his classic "Fufillingness' First Finale" and then was asked to work on "Songs From The Key Of Life" the following year. That opened many doors for him and he ended working with Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, New Edition, Stanley Clarke, George Benson, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer and David Sanborn. He continued to write and record demos, one of them was written for a "Halloween" type slasher flick, but never got used. Phil Ramone contacted him and asked if Sembello had anything he could contribute, so Michael sent him a cassette tape of several demos, not realizing that "Maniac" had been included. Ramone called Michael about the slasher song and asked him to write new lyrics for a specific scene that expanded on the meaning of "Maniac" using it for Jennifer Beals warm up scene, to imply how dedicated she was to dancing. New lyrics in place the song found a comfortable spot at the top of the pop charts for two weeks, being the second #1 hit from "Flashdance" after Irene Cara's rendering of the title track that spent six weeks there. He says the turning point of his career was in 1982 when he offered "Mirror, Mirror" to the Pointer Sisters and thought it was perfect for their harmonies. They soundly rejected it as being "a hokey nursery rhyme", so he offered it to Ross, who recorded it and got a #8 pop hit of it. From that point on, he took a more direct approach to promoting his music. After "Maniac" hit, he released his own LP "Bossa Nova Hotel" that included his #1 hit, and followed it up with "Automatic Man" a #34 hit in October of 1983. He has yet to grace the Top 40 with another of him compositions.
