#FOMO

It seems that life in 2018 is inevitably linked to FoMO. More than ever people suffer from the symptoms that are related to this addiction. Together with Judson Brewer and Willem Kuyken, both American psychologists who are specialised in mindfulness, addiction and behaviour, we will discuss if and how mindfulness can be used as a means to reduce FoMO. They will talk with Sigrid Sijthoff, doctor and co-creator of Kick-Your-Habit. People who suffer from FoMO are less happy about their lives and they tend to doubt more when facing choices and. The stress caused by FoMO can have a paralysing effect. How is social media a part of FoMO? Can one really recover from FoMO and how do the psychologists use mindfulness as a method to help? We talk about how addictions form and how to deal with them. We also want to discover if the social media-addiction will turn into a collective problem and will increase these following years. What solutions do they have to battle this? Judson Brewer is a psychiatrist, neuroscientist and thought leader in the "science of self-mastery," having combined nearly 20 years of experience with mindfulness and scientific research therein. An expert in mindfulness training for addictions, Judson has developed novel treatments to help individuals with substance abuse and eating disorders. He has also studied the neural mechanisms of mindfulness using standard and real¬time fMRI, and is translating these findings into clinical use. In 2017, Brewer published a book, The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love – Why We Get Hooked and How We Can Break Bad Habits Willem Kuyken is Director and Professor of Clinical Psychology who leads the University of Oxford Mindfulness Centre research group and directs the Oxford Mindfulness Centre. From 1999 to 2014 he worked at the the University of Exeter where he, amongst other initiatives, co-founded the Mood Disorders Centre (2004-2012) Kuyken regularly speaks for (inter)national organisations, public and third sector organisations as well as policy and governmental groups. His work has appeared in The Guardian and Le Monde. Sigrid Sijthoff worked as a general practitioner until 2011 and co-created ‘Sijthoff en van Empel, Kick your Habits’ where she works with a psychiatrists and psychologists and helps 'busy' people with their habits. From drinking to working and using the internet to drug addiction. Sijthoffs believes that we as a society have a shared task: because of the influence of social media and because our social lives are linked to using stimulants, it has become normal to have 'bad habits'. Yet talking about it is a taboo. Kick your Habits wants to contribute to a sustainable world where we recognise and acknowledge vulnerability. We strive towards a unpretentious society where balance and letting-go can coexist.
