Julie Andrews sings "Looking for a Boy" on THE GARRY MOORE SHOW (1961)

Excerpt of Julie Andrews singing "Looking for a Boy" by George and Ira Gershwin on THE GARRY MOORE SHOW, aired 26 September 1961 on CBS Five months after her first appearance on the THE GARRY MOORE SHOW, Julie was back as headline guest on the opening episode of the show's new 1961/62 season. This time, she chose to sing "Looking for a Boy", the opening track from her recently recorded Columbia album, BROADWAY'S FAIR JULIE. Written by George and Ira Gershwin for the 1925 stage musical, TIP-TOES , "Looking for a Boy" enjoyed a mid-century revival as a pop standard when it was covered by a number of high-profile jazz vocalists such as Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, and Rosemary Clooney. Julie's version here, using the Henri René arrangement from the LP, is more traditionally Tin Pan Alley/Broadway in style, but it still has distinct soft jazz/swing tones and it's charming to hear –– and see –– the young Julie experimenting with what one reviewer of the time called "nice, easy, straight, relaxing vocalizing' (McCord, S6-9). As another reviewer enthused, "It brings out the warmth and tenderness in Julie" (Laffler, 4). REFERENCES Laffler, W.D. "For the Record." PRESS-AND-SUN BULLETIN . 3 March 1962: 4. McCord, Merrill.
