Contemporary House that Combines Planes and Floating Cubes | Float-en-Fold House

Located in the charming village of Punnayurkulam, in the Thrissur district of Kerala, the Float-en-Fold House emerges as a celebration of transparency and interconnectedness. Situated on a plot of land between two houses owned by brothers, the main challenge was the enclosed nature of the site, with a significant portion having to be allocated to the access road. This challenge is addressed by establishing a shaded access path under a large tree, creating a welcoming atmosphere and gradually revealing the house as one approaches. The concept of 3 axes at entry points generates anticipation of 'what lies ahead', offering glimpses of the landscape, while careful planning takes into account the directions of the sun and wind. A series of elements, such as strategically positioned water features and a courtyard, enhance natural ventilation and cool breezes. The design adopts a 4-wing planning approach, distinguishing spaces based on their privacy requirements. Despite the open and interconnected layout, privacy remains a priority, maintaining the intimacy each space demands. Renowned for its irregular volumes and interplay of light and shadow, the house seamlessly adapts to the humid environment. The ground floor accommodates the main living spaces, while the staircase connects to the second level of the house, where more private areas are located. Material selection plays a key role in the aesthetic cohesion of the house. Climate adaptations shape the building's form, with features such as balconies and gardens designed to mitigate sunlight and protect against heat and rain. In line with the principle of "form follows function," the Float-en-Fold House consciously integrates nature and climate with functional spatial arrangements, creating a serene and elegant atmosphere.
