This is my Columns III speedrun in 25 minutes and 32 seconds, as timed from selecting Hard mode in the menu to the screen fading out after defeating the Sphinx. In case you're wondering, the menu at the start is the Everdrive MD menu - I'm playing this game via that as I don't have the cartridge. Hard mode is chosen because it plays the entire game: Practice and Normal modes only play the first 3 and 10 stages respectively, whereas Hard plays all 11. Otherwise, as far as I know, the levels that are common are unchanged. Strategy in this game is very interesting and I intend to make a tutorial video on the topic in the near future, but the short version: clearing gems makes you earn points which you use to attack your opponent - each 10 wipes one row of garbage off your stack as well as adding one to your opponent. If you chain clears together they become worth progressively more - a basic clear is 3, the second in the chain gives 7, the third 11, and so on. The score counter caps at 30, however, so it's not worth going for more than three at a time. The setup I use at the start of each stage allows me to get a three chain quickly as an opening move, and then I look for opportunities within the stack to make double or triple chains for the rest of the match. I'm pretty impressed with this run, because it both features a perfect 22-0 record and only one fight in the first 18 went particularly slowly (the second one against the snake). The last two stages are so much more difficult than the rest that just clearing them 2-0 is enough to make me happy, but these were also above average times. Sphinx matches can easily go beyond three minutes! Enjoy the run!
