Spinning a V8 Engine Backwards

Driving my V8 Miata at a High Speed Autocross event at The Milwaukee Mile. On this run, I thought the finish line timing gear was on a line further down the straight than it actually was, so I kept my foot in it much longer than I needed to, leaving very little braking room at the end of the straight. When I spun, I didn't press the clutch in soon enough, so when the car rolled backwards and the rear wheels engaged in reverse with the transmission in a forward gear, it spun the engine in reverse. I had no idea that had happened or was even a possibility, so when the car stopped with the engine still idling (making some ugly sounds, but still idling), I tried to pull away slowly in first gear. Imagine my surprise when my car went backwards while I was in a forward gear! I didn't notice any significant power loss after this incident and in fact went on to do two more track events after this. It's currently in the shop to assess any damage and do repairs over the winter. Car details: L33 engine with LS6 intake and V8R cam making 365whp, running on 245/40r15 BFG Rival S 1.5s, T56 Tremec trans, CTS-V diff, V8Roadsters subframe and control arms, DGR Coilovers, Aero kit by CCP fab, APR GTC200 wing, front splitter, Miatacage.
