The RMS Lusitania was driven by four Direct Drive Parsons Steam Turbine engines, producing 76000 hp and capable of propelling the ship to a top speed of around 25 knots (28.8 mph), enough for this Greyhound of the sea to clinch the Blue Riband award for the fastest Transatlantic Crossing on her second voyage. The four propellers measured 17ft in diameter and weighed in at around 22 tons each. These engines had no reduction gears, and as such these propellers would have been spinning very fast. In addition to causing severe stern vibration issues that would plague both Lusitania and Mauretania throughout their careers, extensive cavitation wear of the propeller surface would occur in the space of only a few years. Later in life these propellers were upgraded to a 4 bladed design, which dampened vibrations and reduced wear considerably.
