What is a dental pin? In this video Dr. Rich shows and explains what a dental pin is and how it was used in dentistry. A dental pin is a small diameter metal rod that is threaded into a hole in a vital tooth, to help hold in a dental filling. They were commonly used back in the days of silver amalgam fillings to help hold in fillings that were replacing tooth cusps. Dental pins have fallen out of use due to the use of dental bonding. Dental bonding allows white composite resin fillings to be placed which bond to the tooth and don’t require mechanical retention such as dental pins. Thank you very much for watching! Any questions?
