At least 70 people were detained after police imposed the curfew in some parts of the territory's main city, Srinagar, to prevent gatherings marking the Muslim holy month of Muharram from developing into anti-India protests. Muharram is one of the most important holy events for Shiite Muslims and marks the death of Prophet Muhammad's grandson Imam Hussein in the battle of Karbala on Ashura - the 10th day of that month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Sunday was the eighth day of Muharram, but Shiites hold religious processions from the beginning of the month. Srinagar police officials said many groups resisted police efforts to disperse their gatherings and clashes broke out after the marchers assembled in small groups and threw stones at the police. Police also used water canons to quell the gatherings. No one was reported injured. Large public gatherings have been banned in Indian-administered Kashmir since the outbreak of an armed insurgency in 1989 demanding the Himalayan region's independence from India or its merger with neighbouring Pakistan.
