How to do a Soil Infiltration Test: Regenerative Agriculture at Alderspring Ranch

Here, Glenn will walk you through how he does a simple soil infiltration test here at Alderspring to check soil health and see how fast our soil can absorb rainfall. He'll also do a comparison soil test on another ranch that hasn't been managed under rotational grazing for the last decade as Alderspring has. Soil infiltration rate is so important because it tells you how much organic matter and porosity you have in the soil. Porosity means higher water absorbency, which means that your soil can hold more water. In a drought year like this one, that means that our soil captures and uses every drop of rainfall (there's no runoff or waste). And during a year when we get lots of moisture, a high soil infiltration rate means that we don't have a problem with mud collecting on the surface of the soil or running off. So if you have a mud or a runoff problem, or you see standing pools of water on your place...it probably means you have a problem with the soil underground!
