If you only have time to visit one spot in the entire region, make sure it’s this one. The place exudes an incredibly sacred energy that you can truly feel when you’re there. Surprisingly, or perhaps not so surprisingly, there were only six of us, three couples, in the entire temple grounds. It’s just one of those hidden gems that you won’t find mentioned at all in travel blogs, and I sincerely hope it remains that way—we just stumbled upon it by chance because it’s only a 15-minute drive from Tsunan Sunflower Field, where we originally intended to go. The experience was beyond amazing and beautiful; I was so moved that I literally wanted to cry as we stepped inside and witnessed this Buddhist shrine. I’m filled with immense gratitude towards those managing the temple, as they don’t seem to expect anything in return, not even requiring entrance fees. 1:20:51 Naena Falls 1:25:15 Nagashi-soumen 3640yen/2 people lunch 1:30:28 Imori-ike Pond, Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park 1:32:16 Tsubame Onsen ---- Must eats from Niigata: • Koshi-hikari rice • Hegi soba • Sasa-dango • Noppe stew • Suruten • Poppo-yaki • Murakami beef • Tare katsudon Here's the list of some of the locations we have visited: 1 Kiyotsu Gorge + Tunnel of Light 2 Bijin Bayashi Forest 3 Hoshitouge Terraced Rice Field 4 たつみ (Japanese restaurant) 5 Nagaokashi Mishima Osugi Park (free camping ground) 6 Nishikigoi Village 7 Teradomari Street Market (Sakana no Ameyoko) 魚の市場通り 8 Yahiko Shrine 9 Sanjo Blacksmith Dojo 10 Imayotsukasa Sake Brewery 11 Niigata Manga Animation Museum 12 Furumachi-dori 13 ピッツェリア・ダ・ヴィットーリア (Italian restaurant) 14 Tsunan Sunflower Field 15 Midama-fudōson 16 Shinano | Chikuma River (Japan's longest river) 17 Naena Falls 18 Imori-ike Pond, Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park 19 Tsubame Onsen —— Niigata Manga Animation Museum I don’t recommend going here; there's nothing to see. It's not the "anime museum" you would expect. There are only two rooms: the first room is filled with only photos of animes, and the other is equally boring. It's not worth paying 900yen and finding parking just to enter this place. Naena Falls, the fishing place near the falls, is too expensive even for Japanese standards. It costs 3500 yen per fishing rod, and you can catch 5 fish, but this doesn't include cooking. We have experienced catching the same fish for 200-300 yen per fish in other places. It’s a tourist trap. —— Hi there! I'm Vimmy, a Filipina living in Japan for 8 years. I love traveling, both within Japan and internationally. I've been lucky to explore all 47 prefectures of Japan (and 30+ countries). Our next trip is to Miyakojima-Zamami and Okinawa on July 27, 2023. Thanks for reading!
