JAPAN vs FRANCE | Highlights | Men's VNL 2024. The third week of the qualifying round of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 (VNL) Philippine tournament is underway in Manila. On Saturday, June 22nd, the Japanese men's national team, ranked 4th in the FIVB world rankings (before the start of the match), faced France, ranked 7th, and came from behind to win 3-2 (17-25, 19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-10) in a full set victory, bringing their overall record in the qualifying round to 8 wins and 3 losses. In the first set, Japan's serve reception was disrupted from the beginning, and France took the lead. France was able to get break points from their serve and defense in addition to stable side-outs. Japan's A-pass return rate in serve reception was only 10%, and they lost the first set 17-25. In the second set, Miyaura Kento, who replaced Nishida Yuji, scored a spike, putting Japan in a good flow. As in the first set, Japan's serve reception was often disrupted and they struggled to get side-outs, but they gradually got into a rhythm and the game developed into a see-saw battle at 10-10. However, France continued to score points, widening the gap to 10-13, and Japan took the second set in a row at 19-25. Captain Yuki Ishikawa led the team from the start of the third set. With a mix of fast and slow spikes, they scored a break point to make it 4-0, and France took the first timeout. After that, they continued to score points with spikes from Ishikawa, consecutive blocks from Kentaro Takahashi and Tatsunobu Otsuka, and widened the gap to 13-6. France closed the gap in the final stages, but they won the close match 25-23 and took the set. Miyaura was the star of the fourth set, scoring with spikes and service aces. From 10-10, both teams traded side outs, with the score at 20-20 going into the finals. Japan attacked with serves, forcing France to return the C-pass, but they couldn't easily get a break point. Still, Ishikawa's block point made the score 23-22, and France called a timeout. Finally, France's spike went out, winning the set 25-23 and heading into the final set. In the fifth and fourth sets, Miyaura's spike and Ishikawa's serve earned them a break point, and France called a timeout at 5-3. Ishikawa's service ace made it 6-3. Japan took the lead and continued to attack even after the court change. Ishikawa's spike finally earned them a point, making it 15-10. After losing two sets in a row, Japan came back to win.
