The trenches in the First World War are considered to be particularly tough. In addition to enemy attacks, the soldiers had to deal with all sorts of diseases and vermin such as rats. The rain often made the trenches muddy, which in turn caused the soldiers' feet to suffer from too much moisture, which could lead to infection of the so-called "trench foot" which, if not treated, could lead to a complete amputation of the foot.
