A discussion of the three ways of transporting carbon dioxide in the blood, from respiring tissues to the heart and lungs. First, as dissolved carbon dioxide in the blood plasma. Second, bound to haemoglobin in the red blood cells (RBC) as carbaminohaemoglobin and finally, as carbonic acid, formed by reaction with water in the RBC catalysed by carbonic anhydrase. I also explain the important consequence of forming carbonic acid, namely the effect on reducing the oxygen binding affinity of haemoglobin also known as the Bohr effect.
