In this chapter we meet the crew and the ship, the Western Flyer. The Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research, written by John Steinbeck and Edward "Doc" Ricketts in 1941. This is Steinbeck's only large published non-fiction work. It tells the tale of these curious adventurous naturalists and their six-week trip to the Gulf of California from Monterey Bay, CA. It puts forward an ethic of recording natural history observations and of what the scientific adventure of ecology should be about.
