How To Overcome The Fear Of Death

The fear of death is a universal human experience. So given that death itself is also a universal human experience, wouldn’t it make sense to cultivate a healthier perspective on death and overcome the fear associated with it? Thom shares a very matter-of-fact approach to the subject in this video, explaining that death is already more familiar to us than we might think, and giving us a methodology we can use to transcend any fears we might have around it. You can hear me talking for hours about it. The thing is, the fear of death is a universal human experience. That's because death is a universal human experience. Bodies are dying all the time. Right this minute, your body is dying. It's in a process that's irreversible. Longevity is a fatal condition. Doesn't matter how long you live, then you'll die, so we need right away to get over this idea that somehow death is avoidable. It's absolutely not. You can postpone it, and I highly recommend that, because with each passing year, you get a little wiser. Your body is dying right now. The body is made of 70 trillion cells. Right now, 200 million of those cells, at least, are in the process of dying. It might be skin cells; it might be out-of-date fascia cells or muscle cells or bone cells. Your whole skeleton will replace itself cell by cell over the next seven years. Muscles five to six years, fascia about four to five years, and skin every month. There's not a single cell in your body here today that was here when you were five, ten or 15 years old. Your body has died many times and you're still here. This tells us that consciousness is not body-dependent. So when we say everyone's going to die, we should properly say all bodies are dying. The process of dying will be completed at a certain point, body death. But consciousness already is surviving body death right now. Body's been dying ever since sperm and egg met, so the process of dying has started at the moment of the inception of life itself. Life can't be killed because it is not a killable thing. To quote the famous Bhagavad Gita, "You are consciousness. Water cannot wet it. Weapons cannot cleave it. Fire cannot burn it. It's immortal.” You need to start experiencing that level of yourself that is alive and can't be killed, that place that lies beyond thought. In our practice of Vedic Meditation, we go to that place twice every day and identify with the immutable, immortal, non-change field, The Absolute, the consciousness field that is the home of all the laws of Nature. This is your true reality. If you haven't experienced this and all you experience is being in a body, then you're experiencing right now being in death. Everything is dying because absolutely everything is changing. When nothing stays the same that means the whole world is nothing but one great big mass of death. Let's find that thing that's incapable of dying, the transcendental consciousness field that underlies all of this relativity. That can't die because it's non-material. It's consciousness. Your body is a printout of your consciousness state. It's a very useful construct that is here to bring about evolutionary change, progressive change, and our consciousness is that universal phenomenon that's expansive, unbounded, and the baseline of everything that is. But this experience is not good enough for us just to have it as a philosophy. We have to have the direct experience of identifying with that state through Vedic Meditation, where the technique is designed to take you beyond thought. We practice Vedic Meditation because we want to step beyond thought and experience Being. Now, you know yourself to be immortal. You are immortality that has a body. You are The Universe having a human experience.
