2024 LEDBURY LEADER GRASSTRACK

The Ledbury Motorcycle Club should be very proud of the 2024 Ledbury Leader Grasstrack they put on at Sparrington Farm, Pencombe, as it was without doubt the meeting of the year so far, on one of the best tracks, that made for fast racing. The racing was outstanding in all classes, from the popular GT140 Solo's to the awesome 1000cc RH Sidecars. There certainly was plenty of drama and excitement in the 1000cc RH Sidecars, through the heats, and even more drama came in the Final. With multi British Masters Champions Mark Cossar/Carl Blyth clashing with Terry Saunters/Liam Brown in the heats, everyone was holding their breath for the outcome. If anyone can stop Cossar/Blyth from taking the win, it had to be Saunters/Brown, as they already have several wins over the Masters Champions, but they are not the only crew to rival Cossar/Blyth. One of their biggest challengers is Mark's younger brother Tom, with Wayne Rickards in the chair. Tom & Wayne having beaten Mark & Carl at last seasons Battle of Britain meeting would be looking to take another win over his brother. Add in Paul Whitelam/Richard Webb on their new Honda powered machine, which looks a lot quicker than his old Suzuki bike, plus Matt Fumarola/Andi Wilson, you know you're going to have some terrific racing. Some of the best racing in the meeting came in the 250cc and the GT140 Solo classes. The 250cc class saw an emerging star who shows no fear at all going up against the more established stars on the class. This is Aidan Arthur, who let's just say doesn't have the most conventional style of riding, but he's getting some great results this season. Other youngsters who are starting to show real potential are Shane Knight (Son of Richie Knight), Max Derrick, Hayden Watts (Who loves the wide line), and Liam Cox. These 5 youngsters would have 3 of the older generation to contend with, in the shape of former British Champion Graham Thomas, going as well as ever, the fast starting Tim Greig, and the tough battler Karl Bedingfield. Some of the very best 250cc action this year so far. The GT140 Class saw the return of former 250cc British Champion Adam Shipp, which would make it a lot harder for Ian Clark to take yet another win in the class, having looked almost unstoppable in 2023, and looking to do the same through 2024. With both Max & Wayne Broadhurst, and Paul Smith, Adam Hawker, former Motocrosser Luke Wicks, Mark Chessell, and Steve Newsham all fighting for the win, this class put on some really close racing, and a tremendous Final at the end of the day. A very competitive 500cc class, with Aaran Butcher, Luke Harris, Jamie Fenn-Smith, Ryan & Liam Ashcroft, Jordan Derrick, and the man to beat, the flying, leg trailing Chad Wirtzfeld. He has looked in scintillating form this season, taking easy wins at the Titans of Tallington, Bantasia, and the Battle of Britain. Can anybody stop him from adding to his ever growing collection of wins in 2024? In the 350cc Solo's the wide riding Charlie Wood knew he would have his work cut out to take the win, as plenty of competition with Max & Wayne Broadhurst, Barry Powell, Liam Ashcroft, and the man who's always in the mix, Steve Garside. Tony Atkin is always going to be the man to beat in the Upright Solo division, who clearly would still be very competitive in the 500cc Solo's. With what looks like only one main rival in the form of local man Darren Phillips, surely Atkin only had to finish to take another win. The Pre 75 class looked wide open with Dave Hammond, Phil Kinman, and Martin Adams all in with a chance to take to spoils, but who would? A small, but closely matched field in the Old & New Sidecars, with only 3 outfits competing, but they are 3 of the top crews in the class, and old rivals Mark Courtney/Leon Torres and Liam Brown/Frankie Courtney, would do battle again, but they will have to look out for fast improving crew of Sam & Guy Jacobs, as they could spoil the party. A terrific meeting put on by the Ledbury Motorcycle Club, and a 48 race programme all done by 4:15pm. This is a prime example of what can be achieved with a well run meeting, and everyone went home feeling they had seen a great days racing.
