Newton’s words describe the joy and peace of a soul uplifted from despair to salvation through the gift of God’s grace. Interestingly, “Amazing Grace” is an autobiographical commentary on how Newton himself was spared from both physical and spiritual ruin. It describes the joyful outcome of the tale of a defiant man who manages again and again to escape danger, disease, abuse, and death, only to continue to return to his wicked ways. Before his conversion to Christianity, Newton had a sordid life, including an attempt to desert the Royal Navy, becoming a servant of an abusive slave trader, and eventually becoming a slave ship captain. He lived a life so depraved that even his rough shipmates found his behavior and language shocking. However, in 1748 after believing he might not survive a violent storm off the coast of Ireland, Newton called out to God for mercy, which began his journey to Christianity. After becoming an Anglican clergyman, he renounced his old ways and actively campaigned for the end of slavery, writing works describing the depravity and horrors of the Slave Trade. Close to Newton’s death in 1807, the act to abolish the Slave Trade finally became law and Newton, who was almost blind and near death, “rejoiced to hear the wonderful news.” Although not often done, we chose to sing all 7 verses that Newton wrote. Some of our long-time supporters might have already heard our harp-only version of this song, but we thought this powerful song of redemption and grace deserved a new harp and vocal arrangement for our new HARP REFLECTIONS album. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Get a FREE song download!
