Spacemen 3 - Ecstacy Symphony

From the "Transparent Radiation" 12" EP GLAEP 108 1987, this is the full length "Ecstacy Symphony", a shorter version of which appeared on "The Perfect Prescription" LP. The creative and song-writing force throughout Spacemen 3's history were Peter Kember (Sonic Boom) and Jason Pierce (Jason Spaceman), who were both born on the same day. They met at the (now defunct) Rugby Art College, both aged 16, and became close friends, forming a band together first called The Spacemen, and then Spacemen 3. Unlike virtually all of their contemporaries, Spacemen 3's roots are in blues and gospel music, re-worked into intense, hypnotic, overloaded neo-psychedelia, via The Stooges, The MC5 and the music of Sun Ra, finding their own unique sound on their classic second LP for Glass Records "The Perfect Prescription", combining rave ups with a quieter more introverted style. Their influence, particularly on late 80's/early 90's US alternative bands like Galaxie 500 is profound, and modern bands MGMT, who cite them as an influence and employed Pete Kember as their producer for their second album "Congratulations" in 2011.
