1987 Ussr NT basketball tour in Usa

As the Cold War neared its end, the Soviet Union’s basketball team traveled to America for an exhibition event which saw them go head-to-head with the Milwaukee Bucks. As for the game itself, which was televised on ABC, a competitive start quickly gave way to a blowout as the Soviets had no answer for Milwaukee’s vastly superior defense. The USSR produced a remarkable 17 first half turnovers, and 24 overall, as the Bucks applied the kind of pressure they were likely completely unfamiliar with. For the Bucks, Jerry Reynolds led the way with 24 points and seven assists, while Jack Sikma and Paul Pressey also put it up to the visitors. Cummings would eventually be named as the competition’s inaugural MVP. When all was said and done, Milwaukee prevailed with a resounding 127-100 victory. Rather than cause for celebration, the Bucks were left with a great sense of relief, though. Nov.10. 1987 SAN DIEGO The Aztecs lost to the Soviet Union national team, 94-65. But it wasn’t the score that surprised Gomelsky so much as the crowd. Only 2,186 came out to the 13,741-seat San Diego Sports Arena “I was a little surprised,” Gomelsky said. “This is the first time in all our time in America that we have played in a half-empty arena. It disturbed us and disappointed us. All 13 Soviets played, and 12 scored. They were led by forward Sergey Tarakanov and Vladas Khomichus, a 6-foot 2-inch reserve guard, who scored 15 each. San Diego State was paced by Mitch McMullen, a 6-10 junior transfer from the College of the Canyons, who scored 13 points. Sophomore guard Tony Ross had 11 points but was only 4 of 13 from the field. Soviet won their first four games in their tour of american universities. They have victories over Illinois State 71-62, Georgia Tech 87-78, North Caroline state 99-90, and San Diego state 94-65. The Soviets, leading, 66-43, with 15:05 remaining, were declared the winners by referee Jim Burr. Last week, Knight said: “I don’t know why the hell we’re letting them over here to play. Let them (the Soviets) go play the Czechs, because we’re going to play them in the Olympics in Seoul and don’t need to be letting them train here Marchulenis led all players with 28 points, including three three-point goals.
