Merseyrail, the land where trains still "tick" - 21st September 2023

Another wander around Merseyrail on September 21st 2023. The "must-sees" were 508 117/130, the next withdrawal candidates. 112, 124, 125 and 137 have all departed service since this was shot, with 139/141 next on the agenda in early November. The last 508 in service is expected to be "masked up" 120 until December 31st - neatly disproving the widespread gossip when they first applied them that the ones with masks would be the first withdrawal candidates as 131 is still around too for now. Few would have said that masks would outlive Beatles but the last overhaul date is the all important factor and can't be altered. Still hiding in Birkenhead North Depot is 507 003 - awaiting repairs after several months (manufacturor going bust appearing to be the problem) - it's apparently still authorised for repair so expect it to be amongst the last in service with 001, probably at least until May. Todays edition also features some nicely unexpected action on the Ormskirk line. Supposedly now 100% 777 the old guard are still being called in at times to ensure continuity of service when one of the new order decides its time for an early bath. See comments section for an excellent "ticking" description and the unit list - before we completely break the word count lets introduce our friendly timestamps shall we? 0:00:00 - The stablees at Edge Hill include 60002 and 60056 0:00:12 - Onto the Wirral for a few departures 0:02:40 - My first 777 on the Wirral line is imminent as the next Ellesmere Port is advertised as a 4-car. 777 001 duly appears so we mosey on down to Green Lane. 0:06:10 - Alight at Green Lane for the first time in a while (it seems) and sticking with the "class doyen" theme 507 001 turns up heading back into town (seemingly only having started at Rock Ferry so maybe some of the new crowd not behaving!). We head back to Hamilton Square 0:12:17 - 507 013 rocks up on the next New Brighton so we take a trip up to Wallasey Village. The next city bound is in the form of 508 124 so we have a lengthy out of window view before alighting at Birkenhead North 0:18:40 - 124 departs for Liverpool whilst we board 507 020 for one stop to Bidston as I'd seen an additional train showing in realtimetrains. It produced 777 003 on driver training duties to West Kirby more or less straight after our train left. 508 125 arrives in the opposite direction so hop on to Hamilton Square 0:22:46 - Hamilton Square comings, goings and dodgy camera angles, with a 777 in the mix too. 0:28:01 - another brucie bonus was 507 014/ 508 139 on a Kirkdale-Birkenhead North ECS working 0:30:02 - A change of location to the Northern Line at Moorfields and - joy of joys - the next Ormskirk is showing as a 3 car! 507 010 duly turns up so we head to Aintree. 0:41:27 - 010 continues towards Ormskirk and we get yet another stroke of luck with the next-but-one southbound also being advertised as a 3 car. After some 777s doing their thing, 508 104 arrives to take us to Sandhills 0:48:44 - 507 030 departs Sandhills for Hunts X, 777 007 heads off to Kirkby then we join 507 018 for a ride up to Formby. 507 029 takes us one stop back to Hightown for some jointed track loveliness and after a "spirited walk" over the bridge 508 141 carries us onward to Southport 0:57:30 - Jubilations abound on arrival in Southport when I find 508 130 (stood down less than a week after filming) sitting in platform 1 awaiting another unit to form a 6 car afternoon peak service towards Hunts X. We film some general scenes before 508 136 arrives to join up to 130 so we head for a seat. 1:02:43 - Most unexpectedly (should have been watching realtimetrains!) 777 144 turns up in platform 2 on driver training duties. It departs then so so we and on doing so I see the next arrival into Southport is 508 117, similarly to be stood down on the 26th! I devise a cunning plan to double back at Hightown to cadge it AND get extra jointed track loveliness at the same time. Happy times! 1:11:56 - After being deposited at Hightown by this particularly lovely sounding duo, our "move" back to Formby is in the hands of 507 029 again. 508 117 subsequently appears (we love it when a plan comes together!) now coupled to 507 030 to head south. 508 117 seems to be much rougher riding than sister 130 earlier but I'm happy to get one last run anyway. 1:19:36 - After alighting at Liverpool Central, we see it depart with some other activity thrown in for good measure. 1:22:30 - No we've not "beamed up" instantly to Rock Ferry, it was actually care of the departing 507 011. 777s 10 and 11 are in bay 4 (I think "naughty corner" is more appropriate). A couple of scenes then 777 002 takes us back into Liverpool to do the loop for the first time on a newbie. Much quieter, but the enthusiast in me prefers the noise! 1:31:40 - We see 508 124 departing James Street and then 507 028 follows in so we have a dusky ride out to Manor Road. 507 020 is our trusty steed to head back to Liverpool and end the day.
