Beethoven - Coriolan Overture - Adam Rapa and CORNO Brass Ensemble

Ludwig Von Beethoven. What a BEAST! Some of my favorite moments within his compositions strike me as the Hard Rock of its time. In our treatment, all of the intended beauty is still present, and being performed amazingly by an A-list cast of orchestral badasses (plus myself, trying to fit in). My GOD, the low brass section… But there’s also the added dimension of awesomeness from drummer John Riddell, who I gave carte blanche to do whatever he wanted on top. John’s enormous vocabulary, his sensitivity and his tremendous power made him a perfect choice to infuse all that groove and excitement - on levels both subtle & hardcore - and breathe new life into these old classics. Also Christian Betancourt’s Latin percussion occasionally whisks us away to an island paradise that feels so good; so natural, while being so far from the original flavor of the piece. I find it extremely rewarding to hear the music played this way, accessible to a whole new wave of listeners who might not connect with these pieces otherwise, while hopefully continuing to please the devout Classical audience as well. There’s no magic here; I’m just allowing for this music to be open to the influence of our modern times. If the drumset had existed in Beethoven’s day, I could easily see him incorporating it. This is often a defining element in my works: the “what if” scenario of time being non-linear, and allowing for all compatible elements from any period (and location) to co-exist. The way Jazz standards are covered today is quite the same, often with a modern approach and instrumentation that differs tremendously from how the pieces were played 50 years ago. In Beethoven, I hear a lover and a fighter. I hear a composer steeped in tradition who was also born to innovate. Hopefully you’ll find that our renditions of his music capture those dichotomies perfectly and allow this music from the early 1800’s to exist as an apt soundtrack for our modern lives as well.
