The call of a a person going absolutely crazy and covered in the bodily fluid of their choice. Long story short, problem is cuffed and stuffed, with YOUR cuffs on them. They get into booking and you don a pair of rubber gloves to take the cuffs off of your new friend. You get the cuffs off and go to put them away when it hits you. "These are disgusting" you say to yourself. But what to do now? Blood bourne pathogens are a serious concern to first responders of every stripe. HIV/Aids might get the top billing. But, they need warm and wet environments to transmit. Hepatitis C can live for long periods of time in DRIED blood, and is just as deadly. Those if us who use handcuffs for a living, police, Sheriff, Security, corrections, probation, parole, ect. have a unique problem in that handcuffs are intentionally designed to be impossible to take apart for cleaning. Sadly some people just put the cuffs back in a pouch because they either didn't think to clean their cuffs, or don't know how to and are embarrassed to ask. As a field training officer (FTO) my job is to pass on the tips of the trade for law enforcement. You won't find how to disinfect handcuffs in any manual. Which is unfortunate. I think this should be part of every handcuffing class/instruction.
