RUSSIA: LAWMAKER GALINA STAROVOITOVA MURDER LATEST

(22 Nov 1998) Russian/Nat An aide injured in the brutal murder that took the life of a Russian liberal legislator is said to be fighting for his life at a Russian hospital. Russia remains in shock after an ambush by unknown gunmen on Friday in St. Petersburg in which Galina Starovoitova was killed. The crime has raised concerns over a growing crime problem in the country, particularly organised crime. Russia's former deputy prime minister Boris Nemtsov said on Sunday he was saddened by Starovoitova's death, which he said should wake the government up to a serious crime wave plaguing the country. Mourners continue to lay flowers at the site of Friday's brutal slaying of a Russian parliamentarian. Galina Starovoitova was shot and killed when unidentified gunmen ambushed her and an aide at her St. Petersburg apartment complex. While the aide, Ruslan Linkov, remains in hospital, the unsolved crime remains a top priority for the Russian government. Leading reformist politician and former Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov spoke out on Sunday about the brutal killing at a local Moscow radio station. He praised the woman he knew for several years as one of Russia's brightest political stars. SOUNDBITE: (English) "This is a very, very big tragedy and disaster for Russia. I knew Galina Starovoitova for eight years and she was a very, very smart, very honest member of the Russian parliament and she was one of the most outstanding politicians in my country." SUPER CAPTION: Boris Nemtsov, former Russian Deputy Prime Minister and leading reformist politician The murder of the liberal deputy lawmaker and former aide to President Boris Yeltsin has shocked a country becoming more accustomed to violent crime. As capitalist reforms have taken hold, so have troubling trends in crime and murders familiar to the West. Starovoitova's murder followed a series of high-profile crimes in St. Petersburg, including the murder last year of the deputy governor, the murder last month of an aide to parliament speaker Gennady Seleznov and the death of a leading oil magnate in a fatal bomb explosion the same month. Nemtsov said he feared Russia was digressing into a society based on "bandit capitalism" similar to the gangster days in America's city of Chicago earlier this century. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It seems to me that, recently that St. Petersburg represents some, you know, not 'crony capitalism,' but like a 'bandit capitalism' society, like Chicago at the beginning of the 20th century." SUPER CAPTION: Boris Nemtsov, former Russian Deputy Prime Minister and leading reformist politician President Boris Yeltsin has pledged his personal commitment to finding those people responsible for the latest political murder. But Nemtsov said Russia desperately needs to come up with a broad, comprehensive strategy to prevent more such attacks from taking place. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Russia needs a very concrete and very aggressive programme to overcome crimes, including organised crimes, including political terrorism. Russia needs a lot of changes and improvement, including (in the) K-G-B, including internal affairs, including prosecutor services and others." SUPER CAPTION: Boris Nemtsov, former Russian Deputy Prime Minister and leading reformist politician Galina Starovoitova, at 52-years-old, was a co-chairman of the Democratic Russia party and made her name in parliament's lower house, or Duma, as a fierce critic of ultra-nationalist factions. She was believed to be considering as her next career move a run for the Russian presidency.
