Lexie's Back-to-Skiing Story | BEAR Implant Patient Story | Miach Orthopaedics

When 33-year-old Lexie tore her ACL while skiing during a winter of record-breaking snow, she was devastated. Having been through an ACL reconstruction using a quad tendon graft on her other knee, she thought she knew exactly what she was in for over the next year. She became obsessed with finding an alternative, and she came across Miach Orthopaedics' recently approved and groundbreaking ACL restoration surgery, the BEAR Implant. She was hopeful she was a candidate for the BEAR Implant, and she immediately went to her surgeon, who thought there was a 40% chance it would work out based on an unclear MRI image. Lexie went into surgery not thinking she would be an ideal candidate for the BEAR Implant, but when she woke up on March 22, 2023, she learned that her surgeon was able to use the BEAR Implant. She cried tears of joy. Find out more about her story, including her rehab journey and return to skiing, and how the BEAR Implant works in this video featuring insights from Lexie and her surgeon, Dr. Timothy Crall. Unlike reconstruction, which is the current standard of care, the BEAR Implant does not require a second surgical wound site to remove a healthy tendon from another part of the leg or the use of a donor tendon. The BEAR Implant acts as a bridge between the two ends of the torn ACL. The surgeon injects a small amount of the patient’s own blood into the implant and inserts it between the torn ends of the ACL in a minimally invasive procedure. The combination of the BEAR Implant and the patient’s blood enables the body to heal the torn ends of the ACL back together while maintaining the ACL’s original attachments to the femur and tibia. The BEAR Implant is absorbed by the body as the ACL heals. The BEAR Implant was granted De Novo Approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in December 2020. It is indicated for skeletally mature patients at least 14 years of age with a complete rupture of the ACL, as confirmed by MRI. Patients must have an ACL stump attached to the tibia to facilitate the restoration. Visit www.miachortho.com for complete product information, including Instructions for Use.
