MCV stands for mean corpuscular volume. An MCV blood test measures the average size of your red blood cells. What is it used for? An MCV blood test is often part of a complete blood count (CBC). An MCV test may also be used with other tests to help diagnose or monitor certain blood disorders, including anemia. There are many types of anemia. An MCV test can help diagnose which type of anemia you have. Why MCV blood test is needed ? Your doctor may order a CBC, which includes an MCV test, as part of your regular checkup. You may also have the test if you have a chronic anemia or if you have the symptoms of anemia: Shortness of breath Weakness or fatigue Headache Dizziness Arrhythmia Results How MCV is measured The MCV can be measured either directly by an analyzer or calculated using a formula. In calculating, hematocrit is multiplied by 10 and divided by RBC count. This is measured in millions of cells per cubic millimeter (millions/mm3) of blood. A low MCV means red blood cells are small. Low MCV is seen with iron deficiency anemia A high MCV means RBCs are large. High MCV is seen with vitamin B12 deficiency anemia
