He self-medicated using a medicinal plant. This is the first time a wild animal recorded treating an injury with a medicinal plant. Rakus used leaves of yellow root plants, which possess anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Rakus created paste of leaves and applied it to wound repeatedly. Within five days, the orangutan's wound had closed. Within a month, the orangutan's wound healed without any signs of infection. Animals often self-medicate to treat ailments.
