Cancer Prevention - No Quick Fix | Priyanka Gogna | TEDxQueensU

Almost 40% of cancer cases in Canada are due to modifiable environmental and lifestyle risk factors. What kinds of changes do we need to start making today to reduce our future cancer burden? Priyanka Gogna, a PhD candidate at Queen's University discusses her work as part of the ComPARe Study-a national consortium aimed at estimating the current and future burden of cancer attributable to the most important cancer risk factors for Canadians, including air pollution, red meat consumption, smoking, UV radiation, sedentary behaviour, obesity, and viruses. Priyanka Gogna received her MSc. in Epidemiology in 2018, and is currently a PhD candidate in Epidemiology at Queen’s University under the supervision of Dr. Will King. Priyanka is a cancer epidemiology researcher, and studies the impact of common environmental risk factors on cancer burden at the population level. She is passionate about knowledge translation and the importance of disseminating cancer prevention research to the general public. She believes science is not finished until it is communicated, and tries to embody this in her everyday research. Aside from her academic work, she is involved in mentorship and teaching outreach programs in the Kingston community. Priyanka was the 2018 winner of the Queen’s Three Minute Thesis competition for her talk translating her molecular cancer thesis topic for the general public. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
