How is a nineties popcorn shirt made? Did you know you can make one easily yourself? I DIY'ed a nineties popcorn shirt using a thrifted shirt and the 3d shibori technique. You can make one of those funny shrinking shirts yourself at home with an old shirt using a traditional fabric manipulation technique called 3d shibori. I'm making a nineties popcorn shirt with the help of this old diy fabric manipulation techniques! You need a shirt that is 100% polyester so that the created textures are 'melted' permanently in the fabric. Natural textiles will not be right for this diy fabric modification technique. The texture will shrink the shirt so that its really snug on the body. Than you need (a lot!) of objects to wrap in the shirt. I chose buttons and eyelets because I did not want to buy so many marbles, but you can also do it with marbles to make it more popcorn like. Than you need a yarn to wrap the objects in. I used a knitting yarn but a sewing machine thread will work as well! steam it for 20-25 minutes. For safety reasons I would only use a steamer that is used for fabrics only. Watch out HOT! After you have to let it dry so that the textures can get permanently fixated in the textile. Than you can get your objects out, you can recycle the yarns if you have any upcoming projects.
