REMASTERED CLIP (1994 Shirley Bassey Royal Variety Performance) Shirley Bassey performed in the 1994 Royal Variety Series, which aired on the BBC on December 3, 1994. Other well known performers that night were Tony Bennett, Cilla Black Ronnie Corbett, Brian Conley, and Lulu. Shirley performed three songs, including 'Born To Sing, As If We Never Said Goodbye, and Hey Jude'. This clip includes the first two songs she performed. ABOUT the song, "Born to Sing": Born To Sing, also entitled I Was Born To Sing Forever. Written by M. Jouveaux / J.Barnel / English words penned by Norman Newell. Released in 1986 as B-side of a Towerbell single (A-side: There’s No Place Like London). The recording has never been re-released, but Shirley Bassey has performed the song on some live concerts 1995 on her 40th anniversary world tour. The original French title of this song was “Mourir Sur Scène”. The song was a great hit in 1983 for Dalida. She was a singer of Italian descent, who raised in Egypt, and was very successful in France and some other countries (born: Yolande Christina Gigliotti). Norman Newell translated this song for her into English, and so she recorded it in English as “Born To Sing” too. Norman Newell wrote English lyrics for a few more of Dalida’s songs, and he was responsible for many hits of Shirley Bassey. Dalida has also recorded this song in Italian and Spanish. ABOUT the Song, "As If We Never Said Goodbye": "As If We Never Said Goodbye" is a show tune from the musical Sunset Boulevard. It was written by Don Black, Christopher Hampton (with additional lyrics by Amy Powers), and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Ben Rimalower on Playbill calls it Andrew Lloyd Webber's greatest song. In Sunset Boulevard, the main character, Norma Desmond, reveals her longing to return to the spotlight of fame. This song has been recorded and performed live many many artists over the past three decades. Shirley included this song on her 1993 album titled, 'Shirley Bassey Sings the Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber'. Since the time of this album release, she has preformed this song numerous times in concerts and other venues.
