Noise Reduction Comparison : DBX II, Sanyo Super-D, Nakamichi HighCOM II and Toshiba A.D.R.E.S

This is a comparison video on noise reduction systems for compact cassette systems. The audio you hear is recorded directly from the output of the noise reduction system. DBX II model 224, Sanyo Super-D model N55, Nakamichi HighCOM II and Toshiba A.D.R.E.S. model AD-5 are demonstrated. Alle these devices are companders, meaning they compress the music going to tape, and expand the music coming off the tape. Some are multi-band and most have additional features such as dynamic compression/expansion and pre-/de- emphasis on the higher audio frequencies. The music chosen is a piano concerto bij Tchaikovsky and Pretty Paracetamol by Fisher-Z. The first song is chosen as it has a high dynamic range and a piano instrument, which is a notorious hard test for the above mentionned companders. Especially the so-called "breathing" effect, where the modulation of noise is clearly audibile. The founder of DBX once said that 'DBX would be perfect, if it wasn't' for the piano". Enjoy, and if you have any questions or remarks, please leave a comment.
