Like all living things, plants need food to survive, and they need sunlight to make their food. But at first, this can be a little bit confusing to humans. We think: if the sun is way up in space, how can it feed the plants all the way down here on Earth? And how can plants “eat” anything when they don’t have mouths? Plants have a superpower called photosynthesis, which is a fancy word for “turning light into food.” Using this superpower, they soak up the sun through their leaves, and then they turn that sunlight into sugar inside of their bodies. This gives plants all the energy they need, even the really big plants like trees. But they can’t use that superpower in the dark! This is why plants always move and grow towards the sun, even if you put things in their way. So today, Farmer Nick and Plant will show you how to build your very own obstacle course for plants! (You can even use some of your own toys!) You’ll get to see how plants bend and stretch and dance to get themselves into the sunlight. Like the last two lessons, the hands-on part of this lesson will require you to set things up and come back after a day or two. But as I said before, plants are slower than humans, and this is part of what makes nature beautiful!
