Our people: Dedication, Professionalism and Passion The MSP Airport Police Department was founded in 1947 with 2 Police Officers. Today over 200 police officers and civilian staff serve MSP (129 police officers). We are governed by the Metropolitan Airports Commission and operate independent from any other police jurisdiction. We patrol MSP’s 3 million square feet of terminals and 3400 acres of property which is about 16 miles of fence line. Because we are an international airport we have added responsibilities other jurisdictions do not have. We work closely with federal agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Customs and Border Patrol, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to prevent crimes and enforce laws that help protect national safety and security.The airport is responsible for federal regulations governed by TSA and FAA to maintain very strict standards as a commercial aviation airport. We have many specialty assignments and units our officers volunteer to participate in. Narcotics, security, and general investigations, bike patrol, hostage and crisis negotiations, honor guard, use of force and firearms and the emergency response team to name a few. We also have many of our own instructors for in-service training. MSP is home to 36 Airlines serving 168 direct destinations including 31 international destinations. Daily 104,000 passengers fly in and out of MSP. In 2018 38 Million passengers used MSP. We have 18,000 employees who work directly at the airport. The airport is a very important piece of Minnesota’s critical infrastructure. MSP’s economic impact on the local economy is $16.7 billion annually including about 90,000 jobs.
