AT&T Archives: Design Line Promo (1977)

For more from the AT&T Archives, visit http://techchannel.att.com/archives A short film highlighting which novelty telephones were available for purchase in 1977. (Also see Design Line Fashions, from 1979.) The film uses no narration, just classic elevator music arrayed with sequences of ideal users in their VERY 1970's homes, using their 'designer' telephones. Here are the phones depicted: "Accent" "Early American" "Elite" (in green leatherette!) "Stowaway" "Sculptura" (the ultimate Panton-era model) "Celebrity" "Mediterranean" "Optique" (a rare, stowaway-type phone) "Commemorative Elite" (engravable faceplate!) "Candlestick" "Chestphone" "Exeter" (in faux alligator) "Antique Gold" (rococo, used by a lady in a caftan) and, of course, "The Mickey Mouse Phone" AT&T's consumer home telephone division went with the sale of some of the Bell System to Lucent Technologies in 1996. In 2000, this part of the company was acquired by VTech (based in Hong Kong), and named Advanced American Telephones. AAT still sells telephones through AT&T.
