Workers Union (1975) by Louis Andriessen - Meadows Wind Ensemble, Jared Beu (piano/conductor)

"Workers Union" (Symphonic movement for any loud sounding group of instruments) by Louis Andriessen (1939-2021) performed by the Meadows Wind Ensemble (Dallas, TX). Union Leaders: Jared Beu (piano/conductor), Katy Downs (flute/piccolo), Ben Quarles (bass clarinet), Mauricio Campos (violin), Patricio Gutierrez (cello), Torrance Buntyn (marimba), and Jose Uzcatequi (drums). In this interpretation of the piece, I staged the ensemble into four groups which successively join the the performance at pre-determined points in the music (roughly at quarters). Inspired by grassroots organizing (and a performance by Eighth Blackbird), the staging represents an idea growing from an individual into an increasingly powerful movement as more performers are “inspired to join the cause”. The whole ensemble is a chamber orchestra which includes all standard string and wind instruments (except for horn and double reeds), mixed percussion, and vocals - it is anchored by a pierrot ensemble (“union leaders”). The groups are as follows - Union Leaders (0:00): Piano, Flute (Piccolo), Bass Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Marimba, & Tom toms Group 2 (4:26): Flute, Eb Clarinet, Viola, Voice, & Metallic Percussion Group 3 (8:56): Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, String Bass, Xylophone, & Woodblocks Group 4 (13:32): Trumpet, Bass Trombone, Tuba, Voice, Glockenspiel, & Drum set Groups 2 and 4 each join at extended melodic allusions in the music, which come before or after repetitious ascending figures. At the Group 4 entrance, all members of the union vocalize on a neutral syllable for two bars (“like an aggressive national hymn”). I chose for us to take the original, full coda (instead of the abbreviated alternate ending) and orchestrated the penultimate chords. I predetermined the number of repeats for each cell throughout the piece by reading through the entire score multiple times in my head and choosing how many "felt" right during the months leading up to the performance; there were no conscious deeper considerations. I led from the piano; originally a Steinway D grand until I broke a string during rehearsals and was politely given a Baldwin upright to finish the job :) For those interested, the percussion setup: -10 boobams & 5 tom-toms -5-octave marimba -5 metal plates, 3 oxygen tank bells, 2 metal pots, & small gong -Xylophone -10 woodblocks -Glockenspiel -Kick bass drum, 2 tom-toms, 6 roto toms, tam tam, ride cymbal & china cymbal Program Note by Louis Andriessen (1990): "Workers Union was originally written for the orchestra De Volharding (Perseverance)... This piece is a combination of individual freedom and severe discipline: its rhythm is exactly fixed; the pitch, on the other hand, is indicated only approximately, on a single-lined stave. It is difficult to play in an ensemble and to remain in step, sort of thing like organising and carrying on political action." -Louis Andriessen
