Mostly known for being something edible placed between two or more slices of bread, it’s second definition means to squeeze someone or something between two people, places, things, or materials. For example, her bicycle was sandwiched between two trucks in the parking lot. The word sandwich originated in London one evening in 1762 when English nobleman John Montagu, also known as the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, was too busy gambling to stop for a meal, even though he was very hungry. Legend tells that the Earl instructed a waiter to bring him some roast beef between two slices of bread. He proceeded to ingest this delicious snack while continuing to gamble. The slices of bread covering the meat on both sides prevented his fingers from becoming greasy while playing cards. Voila! In an instant, the classic sandwich was born. His aristocratic title, The Earl of “Sandwich”, comes from the Old English word Sandwic, which oddly means “sand village,” “place on the sand” or “sandy place”. Wic—in old English—is a loan-word from the Latin vicus, meaning “hamlet”, which produced the word vicinity. The first recorded use of this word was in 640 CE. Imagine if John Montagu had been called the Earl of Giggleswick. Millions of people every day around the world would be ordering a “submarine Giggleswick with extra cheese, please”, or a “club Giggleswick, hold the mayo”, or a grilled cheese Giggleswick! Bon appetite!
