A one-minute video overview about Rey's Polystarch Bread and Veg-meat Quarter Portion in Star Wars Episode 7, The Force Awakens. Sealed within a military ration pack, Polystarch bread came packaged in the form of a beige flour-like substance, which accompanied a green protein-enhanced meat substitute known as Veg-meat. Together, these rations were intended for use by troops on long imperial and republic campaigns throughout the galaxy. Once the beige powder was mixed with water, a brief stir caused a chemical reaction, prompting the mixture to rapidly expand and solidify into a loaf of Polystarch bread for consumption. The Veg-meat squares would be cooked separately, and together they would create a complete military ration of food. Many of these ration packs were obtained after the fall of the Galactic Civil War, and scavenged off of destroyed military war ships. Some of the more lawless inner rim territories and planets, such as the planet of Jakku, used these military ration packs as a form of currency in exchange for goods and services, and were highly sought after by the locals as a principal source of nourishment.
