1973 Pontiac Grand Safari Clamshell Tailgate Operation

To be offered on Bring a Trailer at NO RESERVE! Vintique Motors is thrilled to present this 1973 Pontiac Grand Safari 8-Passenger Wagon! Offered from 1971-1978, the Grand Safari was Pontiac's top offering in a station wagon and was also the largest and heaviest Pontiac ever built at just over 19ft and 5,300lbs. They were offered standard with a 400ci V8 or with an optional 455ci V8 and additionally they used the grille and interior trim of the Bonneville and Grand Ville passenger car series, and most examples were trimmed with woodgrain paneling on the sides and tailgate. The revolutionary full power-assisted "clamshell' tailgate design, marketed as the Glide-away Tailgate, made access to the rear cargo area easily accessible. The rear power-operated glass slid up into the roof as the tailgate slid into a recess under the cargo floor. This 1973 Grand Safari was assembled during the 3rd week of October, 1972 in the Southgate, CA assembly plant and is finished in code 60 Valencia Gold over code 575 Beige. It is well equipped and features the W-Code 455ci V8 that produced 215hp mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. All the systems work well aside for the A/C as it is currently disconnected, and it runs and drives fantastic. The only modification in place is an aftermarket center console that houses 2 cup holders and an aftermarket stereo. It was sold new at Stevens Pontiac-GMC in Los Gatos, CA and delivered with 162 miles on June 6th, 1973 and subsequently registered in San Jose, CA. It would spend the next 12 years with the original owner before being sold on June 14th, 1985 to a gentleman from Fort Worth, TX, with a reported 58,642 miles. It was purchased by its third owner from Sunnyvale, CA on August 1st, 1987, followed by its fourth owner from Broomfield, CO 26 years later on August 23rd, 2013, and finally by its fifth owner from River Forest, IL 7 years later on November 14th, 2020. Accompanying the vehicle are records from new in 1973 through 2020 including SMOG checks, maintenance receipts, annual California registrations from 1973-1985 with first owner and 1987-2013 with third owner, and some copies of past transaction documents showing ownership changes. Additionally, all the original books, manuals, keys, and owner's pouch are present. Do not miss this opportunity to acquire such a rare and unmolested example of an iconic American station wagon in a phenomenal color combo that is well documented from new.
