Building a Large DRSSTC | Part Two: Extreme Testing (Propane, Plasma Globes, and More!)

After spending the last seven years working my way up the Tesla coil food chain, I've finally completed my very first true DRSSTC, and now it's time to test it! Coil specs: Secondary coil: 6" acrylic tube, 16" winding height composed of 34AWG magnet wire coated in epoxy. Roughly 60kHz with the 16" topload. Primary coil: flat "pancake" coil with 8.75 turns, 16" outer diameter, 8" inner diameter Resonant capacitor: 0.25uF/6kV bank of fifteen 942C20P15K-F Cornell-Dubilier capacitors (five parallel rows of three in series) IGBT inverter: CM300 full-bridge, 1uF/800V snubbers on each module Bus supply: 680VDC voltage doubler made from two 3300uF/450V electrolytic capacitors and an IXYS 1kV/30A "mini-brick" twin diode. Takes 240VAC (or 120VAC for 340VDC on the bridge). Driver: Loneocean's UD2.7C, powered by a 24V/5A power supply. Interrupter: based on Steve Ward's burst-mode interrupter, but without the burst mode. It can reach 280us pulse times, but I never push the coil beyond 150us. Typical BPS frequency is around 100-200Hz. He has an excellent YouTube channel that features a much larger DRSSTC that draws about 30X more power! And be sure to check out ‪@BackMacSci‬ and ‪@All_Science‬. They both put out great high voltage content! Want to support LabCoatz? Then feel free to join my Patreon page!
