ADRIATIC: US MARINES TRAIN FOR POSSIBLE INVOLVEMENT IN BOSNIA

(1 Dec 1994) Eng/Nat Two-thousand United States marines and sailors are preparing for a possible first taste of the war in Bosnia. They're on board the U-S-S Nassau, which is sailing in the Northern Adriatic Sea. Helicopters on board could deliver combat troops to Bosnia Herzegovina within 20 minutes. U-S officials say the purpose of last week's unexpected decision to move three amphibious assault ships from Toulon in France, was to provide immediate support for NATO forces in Bosnia. The battalion landing team can move enough equipment to establish a beach head. There are 143-thousand tons of bombs, bullets and missiles on board. Morale is high. Most people hope the ship's presence will help defuse the tension on land. But, just in case, the troops are continually training. Not just for the difficult terrain they'll face, but also the possibility of close quarter fighting. Colonel Wayne Forbush is the commanding officer on board the U-S-S Nassau. SOUNDBITE: "We were sent here several days ago, took about 4 days for us to get here and we are assigned as a mission of tactical recovery of air crewing and personnel. We call it a trap - that's in case a pilot has to eject of is shot down - then we go in and rescue him'. SUPER CAPTION: Colonel Wayne Forbush, Commanding Officer, 22nd Marines Full-scale training continues, and they'll be ready when or if they are needed.
