I've been to The Mountain many times, but it's something I'll never forget. My first attack on the race was in 1969 at the wheel of a Factory GT-HO Falcon and I've been fortunate enough to win the classic endurance race four times. The closest I have ever come to not winning was 1988. With co-drivers, Greg (sic) Hansford and Klaus Niedzwiedz, we stamped our authority on the race, mounting a carefully planned approach. We led for 99 laps and there was no way anyone could have overhauled us on the road - we had it in out hands. And, then, within sight of the flag, a five dollar head gasket failed, and our chances went out the window. It was an awful moment. The agony of watching the mechanics trying to re-start the car while another driver took the lead was, perhaps, the most hurtful moment of my long motor racing career. Initially, I didn't like the idea of a professional video crew watching my every move at Bathurst, but the idea has worked well. For me personally, it's a harrowing and powerful reminder of Mount Panorama's ability to bite, and bite hard. This video will open your eyes to what it takes behind the scenes to win - or lose - the 1000 kilometers of Bathurst" - Allan Moffat I don't own the copyright to this video, but it also hasn't been available for purchase in decades. Footage is deinterlaced from VHS at 50fps.
