In this video I'm going to explain how I came up with a set of scale shapes that allow me to play Yngwie style harmonic minor runs at a fraction of the effort level usually needed. The concept is simple: Solo using your three note per string Aeolian postions, but whenever the lowest note on a string is the 7th degree of the key, raise it to be the major 7th. This means that most positions will be harmonic minor in one octave and aeolian (natural minor) in another octave. This creates a set of fingerings that are much easier to negotiate that the standard 3 note per string harmonic minor shapes. If you are a fan of Yngwie Malmsteen but have been struggling to understand where his melodic ideas come from, then this is also a great way to avoid positions that are tough to navigate.
