Agatha Christie and Nimrud

Working at Nimrud in Northern Iraq, I couldn't help but be fascinated by the ancient site's tie to perhaps the greatest mystery writer the world has ever known -- Dame Agatha Christie. Agatha married archaeologist Max Mallowan in 1930 and worked closely with him on archaeological sites after that. The couple began working at Nimrud in 1949 and built a dig house there in 1950. It was expanded twice, and in the later expansion, Agatha had a special room built for her to write in. She wrote much of her autobiography in that room and no doubt worked there on many of her mystery books that came out in the decade of the 1950s. But she was also working on archaeology. She became a good photographer and took most of the photos of the excavated artifacts, and she cleaned and cared for many of the objects as they came out of the ground. She truly enjoyed the archaeological world, setting several of her mystery stories within it, and she is attributed as having said that an archaeologist is the best person to marry, because the older you get, the more interested they are in you.
